Questions families ask

General answers, before you meet

General information only, not legal advice. For your own situation, the free 30 minute meeting is the place to ask.

A parent just died. What do we do first?

We are sorry for your loss. The firm guides executors and trustees through estate and trust administration: probate where needed, finding and valuing assets, paying debts and costs, tax filings and distributions to beneficiaries. Call the firm to talk through the first steps. For your own situation, the free 30 minute meeting is the place to ask.

Do you handle probate?

Yes. Trust, estate administration and probate is one of the firm's practice areas. For your own situation, the free 30 minute meeting is the place to ask.

What is probate?

Probate is the court supervised process of settling an estate after a death: proving the will, paying debts and taxes, and transferring what is left. In Maryland it runs through the Register of Wills and the Orphans' Court in each county. Assets held in a trust, or with a named beneficiary, generally pass outside probate. For your own situation, the free 30 minute meeting is the place to ask.

How long does probate take in Maryland?

It varies with the estate. Even a simple estate usually takes some months, because creditors are given time to make claims; estates with property, disputes or taxes take longer. Maryland also has a shorter process for small estates. The firm can estimate once it sees the estate. For your own situation, the free 30 minute meeting is the place to ask.

What is an executor?

The executor, called a personal representative in Maryland, is the person who settles your estate: gathers assets, pays debts and taxes, and distributes what is left as your will says. Pick someone organized and trustworthy, and name a backup. For your own situation, the free 30 minute meeting is the place to ask.

How it works

The same four steps

Discovery and education, strategy and design, implementation, and ongoing support.

  1. Our process begins with understanding your unique situation, family dynamics, and long-term goals. During the discovery phase, we take the time to learn what matters most to you.

We also guide you through the estate planning process, explaining the available planning tools and legal strategies in clear language so you can make confident decisions.

  2. After understanding your needs, we design a customized strategy tailored to your financial situation, family structure, and long-term objectives.

This step focuses on building a comprehensive plan that protects your assets, supports your loved ones, and ensures your wishes are carried out as intended.

  3. Once your strategy is finalized, we prepare the necessary legal documents and ensure they are properly executed.

Our team carefully structures every document so your estate plan works effectively and protects your family when it matters most.

  4. Estate planning is not a one-time event. As your life changes, your plan should evolve as well. Through our ongoing support services, we help review and update your plan when necessary.

Our annual service package allows us to monitor changes in federal and state laws, so your estate plan stays aligned with current legal requirements.
